Meet Our Race Officials


Ken Legler, Race Officer

ALPHA Course Circle

Ken began in professional race management at the US Sailing Center on Lake Ontario in 1974 and has run a huge variety of races ever since.  Past regattas include the 1975 470 Worlds, Key West Race week since 1994, and countless intercollegiate races as coach of the Tufts University Sailing Team.  This summer Ken is running races at Shelter Island Race Week, The Herreshoff 12.5 US Nationals, The Wianno Optimist regatta, and right after Chester, the Atlantic Class US Nationals in Blue Hill, Maine.  Ken’s style is to balance making races fair but also fun for every boat entered.

Daniel Conrod, Co-Pro

BRAVO Course Circle

A Halifax Native, Daniel has been involved in Race Management for just over a decade now. Starting off as a mark boat for The Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron, Daniel’s resume now includes Race Management for the ISAF World Cup, The PanAmerican Games, The Canada Games. Daniel is returning for his 5th stint with the Bravo Course and promises not to send the entire fleet around little Tancook this year.

Oliver Bone, Race Officer

CHARLIE Course Circle

Born in Montreal, and learned to sail in the surrounding areas. Oliver moved to Halifax 17 years ago to train with the Canadian Sailing Team. A member of the team form 2003-2011, and competed in in the 470 men’s class at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Since retiring from Olympic sailing, Oliver has coached members of the Canadian Olympic, Paralympic, and Chinese sailing teams. This will be his second year running the Bluenose course, and hopes he won’t have to hold up the the signal flags.


Trish Finlay, Race Officer

DELTA Course Circle

Trish Finlay grew up sailing in Bedford, racing dinghies and keelboats. As a teenager she helped her mother start races for younger sailors and ran the mark boat. In the mid 1990ties, Trish moved to Chester with her family. She taught Junior Sailing and was a race officer for Chester Race Week, Opti Jam and various other regattas hosted at CYC for eight years. In 2012 Trish was the Charlie Course Race Officer, and last year she moved to the Bravo Course. For 2017, Trish will be running the new Delta Course Circle.

Brian Todd, Co-Pro

ONE DESIGN Course

Brian Todd has been involved with Chester Race Week since 2010. Recognizing the growth in One Design racing, Brian set up the One Design Race Circle and has been Race Officer on the Course during Race Week ever since. A former Finn sailor and a noted Canadian Sailing Team Coach for Laser, Radial, 470 and the Paralympic Athletes, Brian provides an amazing One Design experience for the J24, Sonars, Farr 30’s, the International One Designs and the J’70ties.
