Chester Race Week | August 16 – 19, 2017

The Latest From Chester Race Week

Our Chester Race Week committee has been working hard this year to make sure that Chester Race Week 2017 will be every bit as good a regatta as any of us remember.

This year we are focused on making it a Clean Regatta and appreciate your support in working towards an environmentally sustainable event. For those of you who completed the survey last year after Race Week – thanks! Your comments were very helpful.

Brian Todd will be the Principal Race Officer this year and will be overseeing operations on the One Design course. Ken Legler will be back again to look after the Alpha fleet. Dan (Cheeks) Conrod is taking over from Liz Shaw on the Bravo/Delta courses. Many of you will remember Cheeks from previous year as Liz’s 2IC. Ollie Bone returns to the Regatta this year as R/O on the Charlie course.

The Regatta will kick off on Wednesday, August 16th with opening ceremonies beginning at 0900 followed by the Competitors Meetings at 0915.

Racing on the Alpha, Bravo and One Design courses will begin at noon; Delta course at 12:30. The Charlie course will begin racing at 1330.

Chester Race Week Joins the Race to Restore Ocean Health

This year, Race Week Organizers are Partnering with Sailors for the Sea to Go Green and Achieve Clean Regattas Certification at a Bronze level.

Our oceans are in crisis; every year, 8 million metric tons of plastic enters the ocean from land each year and 40% of the oceans are heavily affected by human activity, including pollution, overfishing and destructive fishing practices, and the loss of coastal habitats.

Clean Regattas is a certification system that enables sailors to protect their local waters with 25 Best Practices that make sustainability approachable and easy. This program is an effort by Sailors for the Sea raising the bar for environmental sustainability and ocean health around the world.

Chester Race Week, Canada’s largest keel boat regatta, will undertake several efforts in their Clean Regattas campaign, including:

  • Recycling thereby reducing the number of garbage bags going to the landfill
  • Water bottle reduction and water stations
  • Increasing public awareness and engagement
  • Establishing a Green Team
  • Composting
  • Using power from South Canoe wind farm

Clean Regattas is the world’s only sustainability certification for water-based events. The program enables sailors to protect their local waters by empowering them with tips and resources to implement sustainability initiatives. Since 2006, over 800 Clean Regattas have been run in 22 countries and in over half of all the United States.
